Kerrang Analysis

Front cover:
This magazine has also clearly used the rule of thirds, with the masthead at the top which is a banner, and then on the line is the bands' eyes which draws interest and then on the second line is the main cover line which also draws interest, seeing as these are the main parts of the magazine this is a good technique to use. This also makes the page look more organised and more appealing to the audience. The colours that have been used are black, white, yellow and red. These four colours connote danger and therefore this could also attract the target audience as it is a rock magazine and therefore could interest the audience too. I like these colours as they stand out from all of the other magazines on the shelf and therefore would sell more copies.
The main cover line is the centre of visual interest as it is the largest thing on the page and also it is in yellow and a bold font which is contrasting to the background which is mostly red and black. The main image on the page is the band who are all looking into the camera and therefore creating a relationship with the audience, I think I'm going to use this technique as it is popular and the audience will think that they are looking at them. There is also a banner at the bottom of the page advertising what is in the magazine- this is also in yellow which stands out and therefore draws the attention of the audience into the extras of the magazine. Finally there is a barcode at the bottom of the page and this is essential to the magazine and mine will need one, and I like the positioning of this and so I may use this for my magazine too.
[Kerrang+Contents+page+-+Liverpool+live+review.JPG] Contents page:
The centre of visual interest on this page is the images as they take up most of the page and they are colourful and therefore the eye automatically draws to it, also it will be of most interest to the audience as it will be their favourite bands. There are also callouts next to the pictures explaining where they can be found in the magazine this is very helpful and I think I should use this in my magazine as it is interesting and better than just a picture on a page. The page is set out in columns, most contents pages are set out in columns and so I think I should use this for my contents page as it makes it more organised and I think it looks more professional and therefore would sell more copies. in my opinion I do not like the way that the images are set out and I think that there should only be one row and so I will not be using this whole layout in my contents page. I like the way that the subheadings are blacked out with a yellow/black background with contrasting writing, this is so that they stand out compared to all of the other pages and so that it is more organised and helpful to the reader. In this contents page they have only used two fonts to cause less confusion, this is the house font and runs through the whole magazine and is therefore their house style, this also makes the magazine look more professional and I will be using one of these.
Double page:
On this double page spread the main image takes up 1/2 of the double page, this is so that the audience know as soon as they see the article who it is about, I think this is a good idea- it could also draw them in to read the article. There is also a border of spotlights, I also like the idea of this because it could connote that he is a big star and therefore it is important, it could also connote that he is under the spotlight and pressure because he is in an interview. In the image, the man is looking straight into the camera and therefore creating a relationship with the audience, also because he is dressed casually I think that this helps create a personal relationship and therefore shows he is open. There is also a direct quote from the celebrity which is the title of the piece which uses an inside joke and humour to those who know the celebrity and therefore would also draw people in to read it. There is also an informative catch line underneath the title which tells the reader what it is about such as the context and form, I like the idea of using humour and then informing too. In the bottom left corner is the page number which is important to the audience as they can see which page to navigate to from the contents page.

  1. You are really beginning to see which elements could work well in your magazine - well done. Try to incorporate this reflection into the other 2 analyses.
